Review:
We were just us. Broken and bruised. Fucked up and messy. And together, we were everything we never thought we could be. –Abby
Growing up for Abby Ford was like being raised in hell. Abused by her junkie parents and tossed in foster care, Abby was left with horrific memories and so traumatized she can’t stand the touch of strangers. The last four years of her life, after her Nana took her in, have been somewhat normal and happy for her. Sadly, her Nana dies the night of her high school graduation in a tragic accident. Her world has suddenly been turned upside down. Abby isn’t eighteen yet, which means she could end up back in the system. Then she loses her home. Homeless and trying to avoid foster care, she ends up sleeping in a junkyard but is caught trespassing by the owner, who frightens her when he holds a gun to her head.
Jack Dunn, the small town’s sexy, tattooed, biker bad boy, is back to take care of his father’s mechanic shop after being gone for four years. Jack lives by his own rules with an illegal job that is ruthless, dangerous, and definitely questionable. He started riding down this dark path when he lost his mother and brother to death and his father to alcoholism. Jack didn’t shoot Abby that day in the junkyard. Instead, he ends up taking her into his home, gives her a job, and becomes her protector. He saves her. Jack has secrets that could rival her own; dark secrets that might have Abby running from him. But he’s willing to take that chance. Meeting Abby changed something in him and he soon realizes that he wants her for himself.
Abby is such an incredibly broken heroine, yet resilient and strong. The terrible things that happen to this girl broke my heart. She’s a survivor though and persevered through it all. Jack knows how emotionally damaged Abby is, so he handled her with care; never pushing her for more. He knew she would eventually open up to him. He never flinched at her scars. Jack knows about scars. Emotionally, he is very broken as well. His life has not been easy either. So, as they start to trust each other, the secrets are slowly revealed. These two damaged souls help each other heal and the concrete walls they built to protect their hearts start to crumble. And, when they are finally intimate together, it’s beautiful and sacred.
This story has a shocking twist that straight up gutted me. Just as Abby and Jack are starting to feel settled and happy… life punches them in the face. The love and trust they built ever so carefully between them is suddenly put to the ultimate test. You should be warned that there is a very graphic scene in this story that is not for the faint of heart. Their lives will never be the same again.
I feel like this story was broken up into two parts. The first part has really good pacing between Jack and Abby, but the next part of the story felt rushed all the way to the end. The resolution to Jack and Abby’s issues was rushed; needed to be more fleshed out. And there is one particular twist in the storyline that had me shaking my head it felt so unbelievable. But, honestly, I really did enjoy this story. It wasn’t an easy task to put down my kindle when I had to go to bed.
The Dark Light of Day is a dark, intense, raw, and angst-ridden new adult love story. These characters experience a whole lot of heartache, pain, and suffering as they go down a dark and stormy road. I felt every single emotion. I highly recommend this book for those of you who like dark romances.
