Fair warning: Thoughtless will give you gray hairs. And it might make you scream and growl. Lord knows I kept repeating ‘Mother of pearl!’ and ‘For crying out loud – NO!’ over and over. Because… yeah… there is cheating in this book. Emotionally and physically. But there is more to this story and these characters than that. So, if you can get past the infidelity… Thoughtless is definitely worth a read.
Our heroine and narrator, Kiera Allen, is kind of shy and reserved (and blushes – a lot). And, even though she’s not a big fan of change, she’s decided to move across the country to live with her boyfriend, Denny. So she packs up her meager belongings and roadtrips it from Ohio to Seattle, where they’re set to live with a friend of Denny’s from high school.
Denny, the boyfriend, is a cute Australian who happens to also be smart, charming and, at times, wonderfully goofy. It’s obvious from page one that he loves and adores Kiera. But he also has a burgeoning career to manage, which is the reason they move to Seattle in the first place. When Denny gets asked to help set up a new office in Arizona, he has to leave Kiera in a new place with unfamiliar people.
Which causes her to cling to, and find comfort with, Kellan Kyle—the sexy and enticing roomie. Kellan, the lead singer of the D-bags, is a bit wild and reckless and, ain't gonna lie, a man whore. He's slutty, no way to get around that. But he's also broken and tries to do what's right…
Kiera and Kellan both do. But it’s not easy when wrong feels right… and maybe isn't wrong at all. I can’t say that I particularly like, or agree with, the way things go down between them… but I can understand it. Kiera and Kellan are only human after all. And, yeah, sorry Denny, but I fell for Kellan hard. He is the quintessential bad boy with a heart of gold and I was infatuated with him from the start. He made my heart thump with nearly every word out of his mouth.
Kiera and Kellan and Denny… their journey is a roller coater. A tilt-a-whirl. A crazy ride I couldn’t get off of. Miz Stephens stirred my emotions into hurricane proportions. It was frustrating, heartbreaking, nerve-wracking, exciting and… intense. So intense.
Thoughtless is a story about love in all its stages. First loves, finding love, falling out of love, love evolving... It explores what happens when you fall in love with someone else. How do you pick? Who do you let go? And can you really trust the burning fiery passion of a new love over the comfortable familiarity of a current love?
“What if I don’t choose you, Kellan? What will you do?”
He looked away, a tear rolling down his cheek. “I’ll leave, Kiera. I’ll leave, and you and Denny can have your happily ever after.” He looked back at me. “You wouldn’t even need to tell him about me. Eventually, the two of you…” his voice broke and another tear fell on his cheek, “the two of you would get married, and have children, and have a great life.”
I fought back a sob. “And you? What happens to you in that scenario?”
“I…get by. And I miss you, every day,” he whispered.
