Review:
This is my first young adult book by Jillian Dodd. I was a bit nervous to read it and wasn’t sure what to expect from it. The description describes this book as Gossip Girl meets Hollywood and well…that’s exactly how I would describe it too. But I think I would also add Gossip Girl meets Mean Girls too. I’m not a huge fan of bubblegum books but Stalk Me was very entertaining.
I had a rough start with the beginning – perhaps a little too fluffy at first. Therefore, I put the book down for a while. But when I picked it up again, and just kept going, at the 55% mark on my Kindle I had a difficult time putting down the book. The high school drama Keatyn was going through started to become more interesting and less annoying. Then I realized, all the high school drama Keatyn was going through reminded me a little of my time in high school - being boy crazy, falling in love easily, wanting to fit in, and being confused about what is and what isn’t important in life. I’m sure most teenagers go through this awkward stage. We all have a story to tell from high school and this is Keatyn’s.
“Life is divine chaos.”
In Stalk Me, Keatyn is trying to figure out who she is beyond being the popular girl. As she is trying to find herself, she begins to figure out that being popular isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. She may have the perfect life being rich, popular, dating the hottest guy, and sitting at the cool table, but Keatyn isn’t sure she wants any of those things anymore. As she begins to open her eyes, she realizes she wants more in her life.
So she decides to break up with her long term boyfriend, where the passion and chemistry just isn’t there. And then Keatyn begins to question her choice of friends. She wants true friends rather than superficial friends that only care about appearances. These girls were the epitome of mean girls. And now that Keatyn is beginning to realize that she’s not happy in her life, it’s up to her to decide what kind of person she wants to be, rather than let these girls influence her choices and how she lives her life.
Stalk Me is full of high school drama and hot boys. And let me tell you, Keatyn was not lacking in the gorgeous guy department. Quite frankly, I think she is a lucky girl to have so many guys want to date her. In the beginning of the story, Keatyn is still dating her long term boyfriend, Sander, but they end up breaking up on good terms and become friends. Then there is the hot surfer dude, Brooklyn, who Keatyn has always had a crush on. He’s laid back, doesn’t feed into the typical popular hype, and has a cool personality that is very appealing. He’s definitely worthy to date. But, for me, the one and only person that I wanted Keatyn to be with was Cush!
"You're single. I'm single. Let's mingle." ~ Cush
Cushman, Cush baby, Cuuuuushie… oh, he made me smile and drool with all his charm, wit, and sweet words. I would have fallen head over heels for this guy in high school. And all the girls did want him. But even though he has a reputation for being a player, there was only one girl for Cush. Keatyn. So when he confessed his love for Keatyn, my heart did a little happy dance. Unfortunately, things aren’t that simple with these two. Their road isn’t nicely paved.
I am going to be vague here because I don’t want to give away any spoilers. Let’s just say these two have a huge speed bump that comes in between them and their story isn’t quite finished. Believe me, I was sad. And the way things were left between these two, I was not a happy reader. I am totally Team Cush…for now. There was another hottie introduced at the end of the story, which makes me extremely curious to see where Miz Dodd is taking this storyline.
This story took a completely different turn by the end of the book. On top of all her high school drama, she ends up dealing with a stalker that could change her life forever. I did not see the twists coming. And even though I had my doubts about this story, and a difficult time with the beginning of this book, I am now invested in seeing what happens with these characters. Miz Dodd turned a bubblegum, light and fluffy story into something more exciting and fabulous by the second half of the book. The high school drama is very realistic, maybe a bit eye rolling, but still, it is high school. Even though I didn’t grow up with money, I remember being boy crazy, wanting brand name clothes, and worrying about what everyone thought of me. As I took a ride on Keatyn’s journey, I began to realize this story is a lot of fun to follow. So, I am definitely going to be reading Kiss Me next.
