Synopsis:

Review:

Nola Leary is a witch who just wants to be normal. Not that she doesn't love her witchy family, or the help her healing powers do for her small hometown in Ireland... But, well, her magic can be faulty sometimes. Okay, most times. So she's never really embraced her magic.

When her Nana reveals, on her deathbed, who Nola's grandfather is - and the fact that she sent four really important magical objects to him for safe keeping - Nola is sent to Half Moon Hollow to retrieve them. Because if Nola's clan doesn't get the objects by the summer solstice, a rival (and possibly evil) clan's magic will be returned to them.

Which leads her to one of my favorite paranormal hot spots - and to that crazy gang of vamps and weres we know and love: Jane, Gabriel, Andrea, and Dick. Since Nola's grandfather also happens to be Mr. Wainright, Jane's former employer, she'll need their help if she's going to search Specialty Books and a ton of other places in Half Moon Hollow.

Luckily, after a very thorough interrogation, they embrace her completely. And the feeling is mutual… although Nola really isn't sure what to think of Dick. The man just can’t help the fact that he comes across as slightly pervy and weirdly overprotective. But he has his reasons and they made me fall in love with him all over again. Andrea is a very lucky lady.

Speaking of lucky lady's... Nola's first run in with her neighbor, Jed Trudeau, couldn't have gone better. What witch (or, really, woman) wouldn't love to run naked and screaming out of her house (from a Rodent of Unusual Size) straight into the arms of a golden, and often shirtless, Greek god? Especially when he can't help but cop a feel. Or two. I definitely wouldn’t mind. *wink* Did I mention he has a slight Cajun accent? Swoon!

Unfortunately, Jed also has a tendency to run hot and cold. One minute he's flirty and then the next he's distant and avoiding Nola. Not that Nola really cares, since she has Stephen. Her now long-distance boyfriend she keeps forgetting to call. Which was fine with me because I did not like that guy. At. All.

All obstacles aside, Nola and Jed can't help the attraction between them. He's like a beacon for her magic and every cell in her body calls out to him. As did mine. There was something so disarmingly charming about him. I loved the cute little things he’d do, like leaving flowers for her on her windowsill, without expecting any thanks. So sweet. And I had a fun time trying to guess just what he was. Which, I’ll admit, I was wrong about. But, oh, my god, I laughed so hard when it was revealed.

Both Nola and Jed are keeping secrets from each other though. Secrets that only get more complicated. It was hard to watch Nola not trust Jed to be accepting of her witchy self. I could understand her desire to be normal and fit in, but… Jed was just so Jed. I knew he wouldn’t be a poop face like her boyfriend. But, like I said, Jed has his secrets too and they’re whoppers. These two have their work cut out for them.

A Witch’s Handbook of Kisses and Curses was chock full of magical mayhem. Following Nola as she hunts down the magical objects was so much fun—like a paranormal, slightly hillbilly, Romancing the Stone. And, of course, there’s Jed! He might be my favorite supernatural-of-unknown-origin hero ever. Charming and sweet, a true southern gentleman… with a body you could stare at for days. Yes, I love me some Jed Trudeau.

I truly adore this world that Miz Harper has created in Half Moon Hollow. I always love going back and visiting. Again and again. Seeing what sort of mischief the gang can get into. Again. Such a funny bunch. Nola and Jed fit in with them perfectly.

Favorite Quote:

He was built like a boxer, barrel-chested and broad shouldered, with narrow hips encased in ripped jeans. Thick sandy hair fell forward over his face while he worked. His sculpted chest was bare, golden, and apparently quite sweaty, given the way it glistened while he planted paving stone near a pristine concrete patio.
I wavered slightly and grabbed the window frame, my weakening knees caused by more than jet lag. Was this my next door neighbor? I wasn’t sure I was comfortable living with a he-man who could life giant stones as if they were dominoes. And when had it gotten so bloody hot in here? I hadn’t noticed that I was warm in the cab… Oh, wait, it was time for the he-man to take a water break. He took a few long pulls off a bottle from his cooler and dumped the rest over his head.
My jaw dropped, nearly knocking into my chest. “You’ve got to be kidding me.”
