Heroine: Amery Hardwick – Wholesome, Trusting
Hero: Ronin Black – Mysterious, Sensei
That was... So not what I expected. Not at all. I can honestly say Lorelei James delivered on this one. Rough Riders who? I want to be Mastered by the lethally sexy Ronin Black!
Amery Hardwick, a graphic designer who owns her own business, is wholesome. Naive. A good girl. Or, that's what everyone sees when they look at her. Her minister father and fundamentalist Christian upbringing play a big part in that. When Amery agrees to take a self defense classes with a friend, she couldn't have known it'd change her entire outlook on life. Because the owner of the dojo, Sensei Black, immediately takes an interest in her—inside and outside of the dojo.
Ronin Black is mysterious, intense, controlled and extremely closed off. He’s also incredibly sexy with those golden eyes, messy black hair, and enticing gi pants. He’s also not used to people smarting off to him, or being anything other than intimidated by him. Which is why Ronin is immediately attracted to Amery. Getting to know Amery becomes a high priority.
Amery and Ronin had me glued to the pages. Their chemistry was intense and complicated. Sometimes it was effortless, other times it was needlessly complicated. I say needlessly because Ronin is a secret keeper. I felt Amery's frustration with him acutely. No matter how open she is, getting to know him is near impossible.
Unlike getting to know Ronin in the biblical sense. Oh, that we get to know. And it is sublimely kinky and left me (and Amery) tied up in knots. I yearned for all those moments when the gi pants came off because Ronin is one generous lover. Even when he's rough and even when he's letting the kink out, he is focused solely on Amery and her needs. And if you knew just how focused and intense the man is, that would make your girl parts start tingling. Sigh.
I expected Amery and Ronin's story to be a standalone, so the closer the end came the more worried I became. So much happens towards the end and, if the tears streaming down my face were any indication, a happily ever after would've been rushed. Knowing we get more Ronin, more time to delve into who he actually is, in the next book... It more than makes up for the wait. I wasn't at all ready to give him up.
